WIP: Gelflings, greek mithology and other bjd dolls stuff...
We always have several parallel doll projects in the making; our space is limited and many things must be made at the same time, as casting and cleaning pieces for the kiln loading, or painting, or sewing, or to take pictures. These spaces frecquenty overlap in a tiny house that is home and art studio at the same time. Each aspect of the dollmaking process require its own space and specific set of tools and materials in order of to acchieve the final object,and this required space is not available all the time. At this moment there are several dolls being made by request. Some of them has been quite a challenge, but a extremely satisfactory one to deal.
Sansa Stark is always a favorite character to make, for us she has an unique medieval face, an angelic and misterious expression like a Petrus Christ portrait. After to sculpt her two times form scratch, at the third time we decided to sculpt a Sansa master and we include her between the option of heads for our dolls.There are two Sansas and one Chloè being made; they will have four different outfits with a lot of embroidery. Their makeup, color of eyes and hair was specially requested too.
Then, during the past months, a little by little, two new characters was sculpted from scratch some pieces, and modifying existing ones, others; these are personal versions of the Froud and Henson's ones, so the proportions and features vary from the original Dark Crystal characters. One of the pictures shows the size and proportions in relation with a tiny doll but these are the masters and the final copies would be smaller than these.
The hands and feet were sculpted from normal ones, but the little fingers was carved off and trasnformed to have four fingers. The legs are modified normal legs, I made them shorter and thinner to adapt each pair to each character, the same with the arms, but conserving the knees as the originals. The waist of Kira was made cutting and carving a normal waist. I'm very happy of how these characters are becoming so once they are fired we will take molds from them; the resultant copies in porcelain will be very smaller so these gelflings will be the only of this size and totally unique ones. The heads are each one a variation of an old mold that we never released before; we called it "Shaman" . We are still not sure of when the Gelflings can be released.
At last, a very special challenge, which involved to heavily modify our existing mermaid mold, modifying pieces in the raw stage of the porcelain and creating new ones from scratch. She will be a gorgeous Medusa with a modified Nubia head with greek nose and snakes hair and thousands of scales, painted and carved one by one. I made two heads for this character and finally pick one, so the other will be destined to an another project. To play with this snake hair is one of the most addictives things!!! It is made of chains with tiny little epoxy heads each one. Martelled wire will be used to make rings for her tail.
