May 2020: Current projects and commissions info

Porcelain blank dolls, sold.
Meiko girls, reserved.
Goddesses, sold.
Little faerie, sold.
Hi everyone!  As you can see in my FB bio, these past weeks were vey busy ones! First, I want to announce that custom orders are temporarily suspended, more or less until September-November; besides the orders that I am finishig, there is also a lot of ongoing, secret projects that need their special time! So we are saving a pair of months after the current orders to
Malena Angelus, sold.
dedicate to them. But don't worry, we will still publishing new dolls from time to time, some of them will be available for middle June.  Those published in my FB are all already sold but you can also ask whatever you want to know about our dolls with confidence.
Little Sansa as Elf , sold.
Kyra and Jen, sold.
Porcelain heads on process, reserved

Besides the orders we are currently finishing, there are some suspended projects, that little by little were taking form, some of them related to the new line of china painted dolls. Since last year  I was practicing and experimenting with china paints, trying to sort all the unexpected issues they implies, lerning about their nature and  character , and
overcoming some unfortunate incidents.  Like this girl, for example:
China paints over Seeley Indian flesh porcelain.

I am very proud of her! She is made with Seeley porcelain, which is an amazing porcelain but a little temperamental at the time of the firing  I must say; some of the pieces were casted and fired twice because I overfired her the first time I put her into the kiln. But new porcelains are tricky and I know that those things happens, so I tested them all the times they needed to prior to make her,and even then the moment to open the kiln is a cross your fingers one.
And now that she is painted and almost finished, well... A  leg gets broken T-T and now she needs another new piece :/  She is in a box since February and will need to wait a little more :/

Not only new porcelains are capricious like little kids, also china paints. They are very transparent, and need many layers, with fires in between, to set and acchieve all their brightness and deepness. But they tend to fade in the firing , some of them too much more than others! China painting requires more extensive tests also, more than porcelains. And patience and a very steady hand.  My respects for all the incredible artists that employ them.  This is an example of how the colors fade:
Mermaid tail on process plus testing piece.
At the left, a piece with fresh strokes and stains, at the right, a piece that has a layer already fired; yellow and red fade quite a lot, they must be cadmiuns, based on their behavior. I like this pale tone anyway so I begin to paint the blue details. A fortunate accident! I will see at the end if I add more layers of yellow and red, depending on how she turn after all the remaining firings.
She is one of the mermaids sculpted last year.
Porcelain mermaid on process, china paints over non translucent porcelain.
Inside the kiln:

Hell at the kiln.
A view of some other girls, not Seeley, but a new white one, also a headache but it is such a beautiful porcelain, so translucent and delicate!
China paint samples, Seeley porcelain doll and translucent white porcelain dolls on process prior to firing.

I hope you like these new projects as I do, I love challenges, and this one is a long time posponed one; they are still in their boxes, unfinished; but they are patience an will wait, until the moment to continue comes. So if after my current orders it looks like we disappear for a time , don't worry! It is becuase we are working very much to bring more beauty and joy to you :D!

Please take care and care your dear beings in this strange, surreal times! Sun is just around the corner :)

Amado Gravagno Muñecas de Porcelana by Porcelainbjddolls on Etsy

This is a personal version of these beloved characters, Jen and Kira from the original Dark Crystal movie, made by request of a customer, inspired on the characters created by puppeteer Jim Henson and concept artist Brian Froud. For to create these dolls we sculpted two new bodytype and head molds, the boy mold is called Alvar, and the girl's mold name is Eglantina. The original characters are, of course, puppets, so we take the general proportions of them as reference an the rest has to be reimagined to convert them into ball jointed dolls, taking more than one artistic license in the process since the intention is not to obtain exact replicas of the original characters but a totally personal recreation of them. I always wanted to create a doll inspired in Froud faerie characters and this was the perfect oportunity.
The hands and feet were sculpted from normal ones, but the little fingers was carved off and trasnformed to have four fingers. The legs are modified normal legs, I made them shorter and thinner to adapt each pair to each character, the same with the arms, but conserving the knees as the originals. The waist of Kira was made cutting and carving a normal waist. I'm very happy of how these characters were becoming and once they were fired we took molds from them and created master copies in epoxy clay to preserve the prototype. The resultant final copies in porcelain will be smaller so these gelflings will be the only of this size and totally unique ones. The heads are each one a variation of an old mold that we never released before; we called it "Shaman" . You can see a picture of that mold here: https://amadogravagnomunecasdeporcelana.blogspot.com/2019/12/wip-gelflings-greek-mithology-and-other.html

They have double joints as the normal dolls, and 18 joints in total. Jen is 24,5 cms. tall and Kira is 21,5 cms.tall They are painted with acrylics and satin lacquer. The costumes are made with handpainted fabrics, embroidered by hand and machine. All the cords with beads are handmade too. The fake crystal is made with silicon and painted with very washed acrylics and then varnished. The boots and belt are natural leather , with an epoxy clay embellishment. the flute of Jen is made in epoxy too. The wings of Kira are detachable, they fit into two little cuts of the dress, they are made qith gauze and flexible wire under the zigzag stich.

The dolls in the pictures are already sold but these models are now available and can be made to order. Final Alvar mold (Jen) would be 19-20 cms. tall and Eglantina (Kira) 17-18 cms. tall, depending on the batch of porcelain and behavior of the kiln during firing. More head options will be available for them too, and can be requested with normal five fingered hands and feet, and flat and ballerina feet for Eglantina.

Hi everyone! Commissions are open for the month of May2020  . You can check every listing for more detail about each item. If you have a special request or just want to cleared some doubts, we will be very pleased to answer any question. Have a great weekend!

New site with available art!

Since I can remember art and specially art dolls have been part of my fantasies and several years ago I was able to start the wonderful experience of creating them. This road has become my livelihood and I am grateful for it. I have many ideas pending that I would like to show you and that will make me the dollmaker artist I want to be. Fantastic beings that live in my imagination and that someday I would like to materialize.
If you enjoy my art and want to see more, please consider supporting what I do.
For that instance I have created two pages:
https://ko-fi.com/amadogravagnoporcelainbjd
and
https://society6.com/porcelainbjd

The first one. Ko-FI,  is a crowfunding site were you can colaborate for  just the cost of a cofee to help to improve my art in a lot of ways: improving my techniques, acquire new equipment and materials, the release of the  long term posponed resin line and the china painted doll line, to create more beautiful pictures of our dolls and to create new content for our blog.

Society6 is a print on demand site that will allow you to get prints and exclusive personalized deco objects with my art on it at a very low cost. Before to become a dollmaker I was an illustrator and many of that art will be available on it, plus new designs I am working on.

Thank you very much in advance for any help you choose to give, it will make my dream came true !!!

Medusa, protective goddess.

This was one of the most special and challenging dolls of the gone year. I am very proud of her and hopping that I can make at least a similar doll at any moment. There is still a lot of unedited pictures of her in my folders that will be published during the year. It is a way of to maintain contact with her memory since she is not in my hands anymore. We made special props and scenarios for to take pictures of her and look for new ways to show her. My favourite ones are the imprisoned in chains ones, there is only a few published. The rest will take some time for its processing and publishing.

Working with the snake hair was the best part, even if most of the time I was playing with the chains and imaginning all the possible styles that can be acchieved with that material XDDD
All the little darlings were fixed in place with tons of glue and epoxy, over a hard casket instead of the soft silicon base that usually made for the wigs, and they will not move anymore, but I left three of them loose for to play with them arround the body: 3 I put some super tiny red glass beads in the eyes and added flowers and faceted crystals.

The snakes wig is magnetic and quite heavy for its size! It was necessary to replace some of the elastics of the body for a metal string, so now she is able of to hold the body pose. The earrings are two little flowers too. The bra was being made with copper sheet but changed my mind in the process and finally made it with metallic leaves rescued from old earrings, with a little silicon protection under the bra to avoid scratches in the surface. The body was made from our mermaid mold and severly modified, joining some pieces together , cutting another ones, and creating new ones from scratch. The head was made from our Nubia mold, but modified for to give her a gracefull greek profile.
We are thinking into create a prototype of this character.
I fall in love with her and hope you feel the same for this strong and beautiful protective goddess.
